Jerry
Sexton began his racing career as alot of
drivers do, on the streets. Though not
exactly the safest or smartest way to get
started, he at least finally found a better
venue for his hobby. A friend of his,
Charlie Helms knew about his street racing,
and convinced him he would be better off at
the track. So they put together an old Buick
Skylark and began racing at Lancaster in the
Bomber class. By his second start, Jerry
managed to place a runner up finish, nearly
winning. That was all it took, he was
hooked.
Over the course
of the next 19 years, Jerry would be "on
again off again" with his racing. He
would race a few races, take a few off, even
go nearly a season or so not racing. Even
with his intermediate race schedule, he did
manage to pick up his first win at Chester
Speedway driving in the Super Stock
division. Also, Jerry managed to get in
races at several local tracks including,
Lancaster, Chester, Thunder Valley,
Metrolina, and Carolina.
Several years
ago, that began changing. Jerry turned in
his old number, 27, in favor of his current
one. His wife's Birthday is the 21st, and
since she is his biggest fan, it only seemed
natural that for the 21 to go on the side of
the car. Jerry began making more races, and
really began enjoying not only the racing,
but getting to meet and make friends with
people form the tracks he raced at.
In fact, one of
the drivers he claims as one of his toughest
competitors, Chris Fincher, he now also
claims as one of his very good friends. The
two began on shaky footing, as they somehow
seemed every week to find one another on the
track, and usually it didn't end well. After
a few weeks of this, the two said they sat
down, worked it out, and now love racing
against one another.
This season,
Jerry has seen his shares of ups and downs.
One of his and his wife's favorite cars,
"ole red" saw its final race. The car was
destroyed earlier in the year in a multi-car
crash. But the replacement car, "White
Lightnin'" has helped ease the pain by
picking up two wins in the first part of the
year, raising his win total to around 10
now.
This season
seems to be one of the best yet for him and
the 21 crew. With multiple wins and strong
showings each week, he has to be considered
a top candidate each week for the win.
Jerry would like
to say a special word of thanks to some
special people.
Special
Thanks-
