As is the case
in most racing circles, if you hang around
with racers, sooner or later, you become
one. Such was the case with Steve Hinson.
Steve began going to the track, helping
Rocky Philips with his super stock car. The
more he worked on the car, the more he felt
like this was something he wanted to try.
So 4 years ago,
he bought a Mustang, to campaign in
the Rookie 4 division at Lancaster and get
it ready for the season. But first he had to
come up with a number. One day while
listening to the radio, it came to him.
Charlie Daniels was singing about one of e
greatest drivers NASCAR never saw, Stroker
Ace, and the lyrics stuck. "Number 10 is
closing in to even up the score, its time to
wave bye-bye and put the petal on the
floor"
Steve took to
the 4 cylinders very well, and by the second
year, he had picked up a couple of wins, and
was really becoming a strong contender every
week. So he moved up.
In 2006. he
tried his hand a couple of times at the
heavier and more powerful V-8's in Pure
Street. it didn't take long for him to
settle into his groove there, and begin a
full charge towards the front. In fact, he
set his sights at running the full season in
2007, and trying for the points
championship.
The chase for
the championship began with the first event
of 2007, with a win. from there, he would
find himself week in and week out battling
the other title contenders Joe Johnson Jr
and Jerry Sexton. Back and forth through the
season the points went, until it all came
down to the final race of 2007. Steve
entered the race, knowing just what he had
to do, and he did it. Becoming the 2007
Track Champion at Lancaster made for a great
offseason, but 2008, he will be looking to
add another one of those big trophies to his
collection.
