Joey Black is
one of Lancaster newest young guns to pick
up the driving gloves and carry on the proud
tradition of racing at Lancaster Speedway.
Growing up watching his dad race some,
hanging out at the track and helping Ben
Watkins, all lead to an unavoidable decision
to race. So when the announcement was made
for a new class at the track, Crate
Sportsman, Joey felt that would be a great
division to get his feet wet, and start his
racing career. On paper, the class is
relatively affordable, utilizing the GM
Crate motors, and stock bodies. Plus, it is
designed to keep everyone on a pretty even
playing field. Again, on paper. But as Joey
was to learn, starting out isn't always as
easy as it looks.
Joey spent much
of the first part of the season following
the pack, watching and learning. Gradually
as the season progressed, Joey began to push
the car harder and harder, finally getting
into the mix.
His first win
came in a heat race, towards the end of the
season. Though not officially a "win", you
would never know it judging by the
youngsters reaction. Finishing first in the
heat, helped to fuel an already burning
fire.
Since then he
has picked up a couple of more heat wins,
but not any features yet, though they are
surely coming. With each passing week, you
can see the confidence starting to build and
the ability levels starting to rise.
His time has
somewhat been limited though as the
season winds down though, as Joey has to
balance a fine line between his racing and
his studies. During the week, he attends
Clemson University, where he is studying to
become an engineer.
Knowing the
importance of his education, Joey still
enjoys his time at the track, but
knows he must first excel in the classroom
in order to achieve his other racing goals.
With that being said though, a trophy on the
mantle would be a nice addition to the
degree on the wall.
Joey would like to give
a special thanks to those who have helped
him start his racing career off.
